CONTEXT This photo is taken by a beautiful lake near my hometown Hafnarfjordur. The lake and its surroundings is a wonderful place for photographers. I often go there all year around to photograph and in all kind of weather conditions. When I arrived to the lake this time it was still dark but I started setting up my tripod and began photographing. Gradually it became brighter and when the sun was about to come up I saw various colours in the sky. For a brief moment the colour purple was the most obvious one and in that exact moment I took this photo. THE PICTURE This picture is taken with a Canon EOS 5D and Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II lens. Settings: Focal length: 16mm, aperture: f/22, shutter speed: 15sec, ISO: 100. I also used Tiffen ND 1.2 filter. PROCESSING The photo was taken in raw format and converted in Camera Raw and then processed in Photoshop CS3. In order to emphasize my unique experience by the lake I exaggerated the purple tones a little in the post processing. That was my main task along with some minor improvements in light and contrast. OUTCOME I think it is very important to take the time to figure out the light and the colours each time. It?s not enough to know the place, because it can easily change depending on circumstances, such as the weather, season and light. That's why I prefer to push the button of my "inner camera" and save it in the photo-collection of my mind where light and colours are "right" and which the real camera may not fully grasp - and after that is time for the most important step in the post processing in my opinion. But that is to bring out the reality which I did experience in that precise moment when I took the picture. In that light I was rather pleased with the outcome and especially the mood in the picture. HINTS So my hints would be: 1) When you are taking landscape photographs you should take your time to experience the place on the moment a picture is taken - and try to deliver it into the composition, so the viewer can see how it looked like to you and even how you felt when you took the picture. 2) It is very helpful to remain at that particular place for some time and take in the environment with all senses, even research the history of that place, figure out the local landmarks and learn the place names. That's how the atmosphere of the place penetrates your mind, your inner awareness and it becomes easier for you to bring that out in the photo. 3) And in the post processing it is often successful to exaggerate a bit to try to bring out in the image your own experience, but of course it is important not to go overboard. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION "Kleifarvatn is the largest lake on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland, situated in the southern part of the peninsula on the fissure zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The lake can be reached via a track, and there are two areas with high temperature that can be found not far from it: Seltún/Krýsuvík and another to the east. The lake's greatest depth is 97 m."
