CONTEXT I was on a photo trip on the south coast of Iceland and had planned to visit some interesting places; this was one place, Vik in Myrdalur where it is possible to photograph these beautiful pillars of rock called Reynisdrangar. I arrived in the afternoon but wanted to get the photo later when the sun was setting. So I waited, took some photos and kept my eye on the light and weather conditions. The weather was very beautiful that day but I found the sky a bit too clear for my taste. When the sun went down the sky got more interesting when the red colour became more prominent, but I wanted some more of the red so I decided to use my half red filter on the lens. I had already put my camera on the tripod near the ground because I wanted to have a low angle over the sea to the rocks and mountain. THE PICTURE This picture is taken with Canon EOS Digital Rebel and Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens. Settings: Focal length: 47mm, aperture: f/18, shutter speed: 60sec, ISO: 100. I also used an ND 1.2 and a half coloured red filter. PROCESSING I did not have to do very much in the post processing stage. I cropped it a bit to make a better balance in the frame, adjusted the light a little because it came out a bit too dark and increased the contrast to make the silhouette stronger. OUTCOME I have always been very keen on silhouette photography and especially during a particular period in my photographic career, which was when I took this photo seven years ago. So with that in mind it came out the way I wanted. But there are also more factors to make the photo; I wanted the movement in the sea quiet and peaceful along with the foreground interesting enough to make the first impression on viewers. My main goal was to achieve a good coastal landscape photo during a late summer evening - and especially wanted to emphasize the opposites in the Icelandic landscape and environment, the peace against the swell, the softness versus the rough, the small versus the big and the bright versus the dark. HINTS The most important thing to bear in mind when taking photos like this is to be in the right place when the weather conditions are right. If you have to travel a long way to visit and photograph a location; it is necessary to prepare and investigate the circumstances in that particular place with plenty of time in hand. Secondly it is advantageous to take some time on the spot to observe the light and weather, to understand the environment and breathe in the atmosphere before you are ready to start to photograph. And of course it is important to think carefully about what camera settings to use to get correct silhouettes; underexposing somewhat has proved to give good results. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION I would like to add some information about this place which attracts many travellers and photographers every year. These pillars of rock are called Reynisdrangar and are located under the mountain Reynisfjall near the village of Vík í Mýrdal in southern Iceland. Reynisdrangar are basalt sea stacks which are very beautiful from this point of view and can also be seen from the other side at Reynisfjara. BIOGRAPHY I am an amateur photographer born in Iceland in 1961. Photography has been my favourite hobby for a very long time, ever since I got my first camera when I was 12 years old. I travel a lot which fits well with my love for nature and landscape photography. My photos have been published far and wide and have won prizes in many international photo contests. My homepage
