Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida

    A master of light

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, born February 27, 1863 in Valencia, Spain, was a renowned Spanish painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is often considered one of the most important exponents of Spanish Impressionism and is known for his vibrant and luminous paintings. Sorolla grew up in Valencia and showed a passion for art at an early age. At the age of 15, he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia, where he was taught by renowned artists. After graduating, he received a scholarship that allowed him to travel to Rome and study the masterpieces of the Renaissance. These experiences had a strong influence on his artistic style. After returning to Spain, Sorolla settled in Madrid and began to participate in international exhibitions. He quickly gained recognition for his striking paintings, which often depicted scenes of everyday Spanish life and rural life. Sorolla was a master of light and color, creating paintings that impressed with their vividness and ability to capture moments of daily life. In 1900, Sorolla attracted international attention when he presented his works at the Paris World's Fair. His success earned him numerous invitations to exhibit from around the world, including the United States. He made several trips to America, painting portraits of prominent figures such as President William Howard Taft. Sorolla's painting style was characterized by a quick and loose brush technique that allowed him to capture movement and atmosphere in his works. His favorite subjects were beach scenes, fishermen, gardens, and portraits. He also painted socially critical works that depicted social injustices and the hard work of fishermen and farm workers. Throughout his career, Sorolla received numerous awards and honors. He was named a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid and was knighted with the Order of the Golden Fleece.
