Paul Cézanne

  • Born: 19. January 1839 in Aix-en-Provence
  • Died: 22. October 1906

Key figure of the post-impressionist movement

Paul Cézanne was born in Aix-en-Provence, France, on January 19, 1839. He came from a wealthy family and showed an early interest and talent for art. Although his father would have preferred him to become a lawyer, his mother supported his artistic endeavors.

Cézanne initially studied law at the University of Aix-Marseille, but soon abandoned his studies to devote himself entirely to painting. In 1861, he moved to Paris and enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he learned various artistic techniques and developed his skills.

Cézanne was a key figure in the Post-Impressionist movement and is considered a bridge between Impressionism and 20th century modern art. His style was of great importance in the development of Cubism and Abstract Expressionism.

Cézanne's painting style was characterized by an innovative approach to form and perspective. He broke with the traditional rules of academic art and developed a new way of seeing and representing space and light. He placed great emphasis on the composition of his works, experimenting with geometric shapes and color harmonies.

Cézanne was also known for his series of paintings in which he depicted the same subject from different angles to capture the complexity of perception. This series of paintings, especially his famous Montagne Sainte-Victoire paintings, had a great influence on the following generation of artists.

Although Cézanne had limited commercial success during his lifetime and his works were often rejected by critics, he was recognized after his death as one of the most important artists of the 19th century. His innovative style and influence on modern art gained increasing recognition.

Paul Cézanne died on October 22, 1906, in Aix-en-Provence. His artistic legacy had a major impact on 20th-century art, and his works are now exhibited in prestigious museums and galleries around the world.
