Born on January 24th, 1914 in Aberdeen (Washington), Robert Motherwell was the youngest and most powerful exponent of abstract Expressionism. At the same time, he saw himself as a philosopher as well as a critic of contemporary politics. This awareness becomes important in connection with a series of works he painted as a reaction to the Spanish Civil War from 1936 - 1939. They are elegies that mourn the self-inflicted death of a great civilisation. His thick black objects fill the canvas with images that mourn the slaughter of animals for pleasure. His "Elegy to the Spanish Republic" expresses deep mourning, dignity and a generosity of feeling. On the same topic, he completed a cycle with more than 80 variations. Even without knowing the title the viewer could feel it has to do with mourning. Although critics often describe his paintings as ecstatic and dynamic, because of their dark weightiness and hidden colours, they show a noble restraint, accompanied by what seems like silent resignation.
