CONTEXT I have always been very interested in all kinds of ships and boats - and think they are very good subjects for photography. On a beautiful summer day I saw this big cruise ship in the harbor of my hometown Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, so I grabbed my camera and went there. On the way I phoned my friend, the head of the port authority, to get permission to go to the closed area by the ship. As usual I started searching for some new perspectives, when suddenly I thought of how it would be from under the ropes. How would the mouse see the ship from there? So I lied down on the pier and put my camera under and at the end of the ropes. I could not use the viewfinder (my head was too big) and took several photos until I got the composition right. THE PICTURE I used my Canon EOS 5D Mark II when I took this picture with Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II lens. Settings: Focal length: 16mm, aperture: f/18, shutter speed: 1/30sec, ISO: 100. PROCESSING The photo was taken in raw format and converted in Camera Raw and then processed in Photoshop CS4. I had to rotate and crop it a bit correcting some tilt. I decided to convert it to monochrome because I found it better that way. I also did some adjustments with curves, levels and dodge&burn - and finally sharpened it with unsharp mask. OUTCOME This is a big ship and I wanted the viewer to feel the size when looking on the photo - and because the ship is the main subject I wanted to use the lines available in the neighbourhood to lead the eye to it. I was also pleased that a man was walking by to give some sense of the size of the ship. I liked the outcome and I have had a lot of good and positive comments about it. This photo also won first price in a competition. HINTS 1) Always try to do something new and different when taking photos. 2) Have in mind to use what you have in your surroundings to lead the eye to what is most important, the ship in this case, but a big part of a good structure in a photo is to use the environment well and what it has to offer every time. When the main subject has been chosen you need to think about what supports it and then particularly keep in mind what appears in the foreground on one hand and the background on the other hand. 3) For everything to fit well together you need to find the best perspective/point of view, but that must always be a part of the lines that you choose as a foundation each time. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION This cruise ship MSC Poesia is one of the largest ships in this class. The length is 293.8 meters and the beam is 32.2 meters. The displacement of the cruise ship is 89,900 tons, which is giving a place for more than 3000 guests and 987 crew members. MSC Poesia has 1,275 cabins for the guests and can reach the maximum speed of 23 knots. (From the internet) BIOGRAPHY I am an amateur photographer born in Iceland 1961.
