One of my very favourite pictures, which was dangerous to shoot: In 1974, at the height of "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland, I went on holiday to the Republic of Ireland and travelled around the country. Then, as young men tend to do, I ambitiously decided that I wanted to take an iconic picture that would symbolise the ravages of the conflict on ordinary people, specially children, so I crossed the Northern Irish border and hitchhiked to Londonderry (Derry), intending to stay only long enough to find my picture. I had three cameras in a big camera bag and no journalist accreditation. I realised what I was doing was dangerous as if I was stopped by the IRA they might think I was an army photographer or a protestant; and if I was stopped by the protestants they might think I was IRA. But I carried through with my plan and walked the streets until I found this scene with this child holding part of a torn carton possessively, as if it were her only possession or a toy with a distant expression. On the wall in next to her somebody had scrawled the letters IRA (it's interesting to note that these letters spell the word "ira", which means rage in Spanish. I shot the picture, immediately left the city and crossed back over the border. I shot the picture using the zone-focussing. Although the picture is not up to the technical standards of today's digital resources, I still think it is special and expresses exactly what I was looking for at the time I shot it.
