MOMENT OF KUSHTI by As Dnyaneshwar Vaidya

This Picture is available as Photo Print, Canvas on Stretcher, Framed Picture, Glass Print and Wall Paper.

I have been practicing photography since 2015 and have been pursuing it as a hobby from 2015 to 2020. In this time period I have been fortunate enough to encounter various interesting subjects. I hail from a small village called Narsobachi Wadi which is in the district of Kolhapur which is also believed to be the birthplace of Kusti (Wrestling). Many wrestlers from all over the world have visited Kolhapur and learnt the art of Kusti and thus, the city has produced thousands of such ‘Pailwans’ or wrestlers. There is a unique charm to the soil and the masters who are present in Kolhapur. There is no compromise where effort, exercise and diet are involved for the proper functioning of the wrestlers. Since Kolhapur is famous for Kusti, it was impossible for my camera lens to miss this opportunity. I have visited many places to photograph the art of Kusti, but the intensity that I got from Kolhapur was unmatched. The most fascinating observations were the essence of the soil that is used in the arena, the lifestyle of the wrestlers as well as the way they cook their food which expressed itself very organically to me because Kolhapur has protected this lifestyle with a lot of devotion. The beauty is in the details; the colour and richness of the soil that is seen in an arena in Kolhapur has no match with any other wrestling arena anywhere. The difference was illustrated especially when I set foot in the ring and felt a rush of energy. My tryst with Kusti was quite fulfilling. The ride to Kolhapur is around an hour and a half from my village and I would wake up at 3 in the morning to make it in time to witness the wrestlers’ activity. The practice used to go on till the afternoon until it was time for their lunch and a bit of a rest. After a spot of cooldown, I used to witness their wrestling matches from 3 pm up till 7 pm and this was when the action truly began. All the arenas I photographed at had a lot of natural lighting, hence my photographs have a very unique and natural feel to it. This carried on for around 22 days and every moment was special for me. The actions of the wrestlers are really fast; hence I was always on my toes with my camera to capture a specific action. At times when I could not click a photo at the perfect time, I kept a track for the same moment again even if it took several days to capture it. It was my passion which led me to capture natural looking, candid photographs and not stage any activity that I have captured. Kusti photography is a work of patience and if one wishes to do it, they need to spend at least 5 days in Kolhapur to understand how to capture the lifestyle of the wrestlers and the art of Kusti itself.
